Samsung's Galaxy Fold might ship in June, but nothing's simple

Image
Samsung's Galaxy Fold — the $1,980 folding phone whose launch has been delayed after several reviewers reported issues with the screen — might launch on June 13. This is according to an email that AT&T has been sending to its customers — but, unfortunately, it's not as simple as that.  SEE ALSO: Hands-on with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold and its foldable display As The Verge points out, Samsung hasn't confirmed June 13 — or any other date — as the new, official launch date. Furthermore, AT&T's email to customers says that "federal regulations" require the company to ask customers to accept a new shipping date, which might mean AT&T had to choose some date and they went with what they thought was most likely.  Read more... This on-the-go Spotify player lets you stream Beyoncé's 'Lemonade' without a phone or WiFi

Image
ICYMI amid the Homecoming hubbub, Beyoncé's set to finally drop the audio from her landmark film Lemonade on all on-demand streaming services later this month.  April 23 — as in, the third anniversary of Lemonade 's release on HBO — will mark the first time ever that fans will be able to listen to the studio versions of Her Bey-ness' bops via Spotify. Of course, it's hard to strut to "Formation" or giddyup to "Daddy Lessons" when you're tethered to a mobile device, where most people's Spotify listening takes place. Not only are the average smartphones and tablets ultra-clunky, but their battery lives can be iffy, especially when you're running a data-draining app like Spotify in the background. Read more... This motion-activated, germ-fighting toilet light makes going to the bathroom way more groovy

Image
Nighttime trips to the bathroom don't normally elicit much thought. They probably should, since the bathroom's where some of the most accidents in the home happen. Ever fallen or gotten bumps and bruises during a late-night bathroom excursion? Exactly. That was the line of thinking motivating entrepreneurs Matt Alexander and Mike Kannely, who came up with the IllumiBowl — a motion-activated toilet light that makes finding your way to and using your porcelain throne less fraught with late-night peril. If it sounds familiar, that's because it was featured on ABC's Shark Tank in 2016, during which Alexander and Kannely scored a seed investment in the company. Read more... Your dead iPhone can live on as beautiful artwork

Image
The moment you realize your phone is dead, and you'll have to spend at least a few hundred bucks for a new one, is never a very happy one. But you can make it a bit less frustrating by taking your phone apart, glueing the parts onto a glass, and framing it as if it were an artwork.  Reddit user TheIncorporeal did exactly that , and the result is quite aesthetically pleasing — especially if you're a tech geek.  SEE ALSO: Apple's new iPhones will have a 12-megapixel selfie camera, report claims Of course, making it look this nice isn't exactly easy, but TheIncorporeal has some tips on how to do it. The short version is that you need to find the right frame and arm yourself with patience; but check out his comments, below, for details.  Read more... Tesla Model S and Model X ranges get big upgrades

Image
Tesla is giving its Model S and Model X cars much-needed boosts — just as its older offerings have seen sales languish. Range and charging capabilities will be upgraded in both, the carmaker announced in a blog post Tuesday. Tesla is also bringing back a cheaper version of the cars that don't have as much range. The new Model S can now get 370 miles on a single charge, while the Model X steps up to 325 miles thanks to an all-new drivetrain design. Previously, these cars got 335 miles and 295 miles out of their batteries, respectively. (To help you picture all that, the shortest route from LA to San Francisco is about 380 miles.) The cars will be slightly less-expensive than what used to be Tesla's longest-range options: starting at $88,000 for the S and $93,000 for the X . These upgrades come with no changes to the cars' 100 kWh battery packs. The improvements will start at its Fremont factory this week.  Read more... Twitter co-founder subtweets Jack Dorsey into dust following Trump meeting

Image
The subtweet is coming from inside the house. Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey was on the receiving end of a not-so-subtle own today following an April 23 Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump. It seems that Biz Stone, one of the company's original co-founders, doesn't think too highly of the CEO's justification for meeting with the President. And so, Stone did what many frustrated Twitter users do: he used the platform to make his displeasure known.  SEE ALSO: Twitter users trolled Jack Dorsey on a giant projection screen during his TED Talk "I’ve got a meeting today that could result in division," wrote Stone . "I’m letting you know so you don’t hear it from someone else first. I’m volunteering at a grade school math center. I’m hoping both parties will learn from the exchange." Read more... Ford wants to build a better app store for cars

Image
Last year Ford brought on the startup Autonomic to create the Transportation Mobility Cloud , or TMC, to build "smart" car applications for real-time data and connectivity in cars. On Tuesday, Ford announced Amazon Web Services will power the cloud-based platform. The platform has since been available for all car makers, not just Ford. It creates a space for services and apps, like those used for parking, real-time traffic information, and in-car payment options. Think of it like the Apple App Store, but with apps and services made solely for the car. SEE ALSO: Adobe’s first auto app will give real-time car maintenance tips Read more... Snapchat just grew for the first time in a year

Image
Is it too soon to call this a turnaround? Maybe, but things are starting to look up for Snap . The company just reported its results for the first quarter of 2019 and delivered investors some long overdue good news: Snapchat added new users for the first time in a year. The app now counts 190 million daily active users (DAUs), up from 186 million last quarter. Overall, DAUs are still down from its previous peak of 191 million, but the new growth suggests the company has been able to reverse the momentum caused by an unpopular redesign last year. $Snap results are in and Snapchat just had its first quarter of growth in a year (though DAUs are still slightly down from Q1 '18) pic.twitter.com/2INobIUIfZ — Karissa Bell (@karissabe) April 23, 2019 Read more... Kids hack dad's facial recognition lock in easiest way possible

Hacking facial-recognition systems is so easy a kid could do it.  One Irish politician found this out the hard way when he discovered the reason he kept finding his laptop battery drained. Mark Zuckerberg might not be untouchable after all

Image
Mark Zuckerberg may soon find himself in an unfamiliar situation: facing actual, personal consequences for Facebook's missteps.  As the FTC continues to investigate the social network's mishandling of user data, it's looking more and more likely that officials will single out the Facebook CEO as they look to impose new punishments on the company.  Days after the Washington Post reported the FTC is in the midst of "discussions about how to hold Zuckerberg accountable for Facebook’s data lapses," the paper now reports a Democratic senator is urging the agency to put the Facebook founder on blast. Zuckerberg should be "individually liable," for Facebook's privacy violations, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden wrote in a letter to the FTC. Read more... Microsoft Paint won't be banished to oblivion—for now

Image
One of technology's last truly innocent creations just got an 11th hour reprieve.  Microsoft Paint , the 33-year old program released with the first version of Windows back in 1985, is not being banished to the oblivion of the Windows Store after all — news that is sure to warm the cockles of many an elderly digital Seurat's heart.  The program was added to Microsoft's " deprecated " list back in 2017, and in the summer of that year Microsoft insisted that MS Paint would always be available for download in the Windows Store. However, unbundling it from Windows appeared to many like step one in a two-step process of removing it from life support.  Read more... Tim Cook says 'we don't want people using their phone all the time.' That's total BS.

With his spectacles and kindly smile, Tim Cook is just one of those guys who sounds like he means well. Maybe he does — but he also means business. Cook spoke at the Time 100 Summit in New York City on Tuesday. The Apple CEO covered a range of topics, including regulations, political donations, and a somewhat clumsily dodged question about President Donald Trump.
